Virginia Leonard is a contemporary New Zealand artist working with ceramics. Beginning with the familiar language of the vessel, she creates complex sculptural forms in which the boundaries between functional object, organic structure, and abstraction dissolve.
Her works are built through layers of clay, glaze, resin, and hand-formed ceramic elements, resulting in richly textured surfaces that appear almost alive. Seductive yet unsettling, they balance ornamental abundance with a powerful sense of fragility, corporeality, and continuous transformation.
Leonard’s practice is rooted in an intense engagement with material. Clay becomes a means of giving physical form to personal experience while remaining open to multiple readings. Existing between object, sculpture, and artistic gesture, her works reveal the expressive potential of ceramics as a contemporary sculptural language.
