Marius Ritiu

Marius Ritiu — a Belgian artist and sculptor whose practice unfolds at the intersection of minimalism, conceptual art, and sculpture. His works explore themes of identity, memory, and collective consciousness through form, material, and the spatial presence of the object.

Born in 1984 in Satu Mare, Romania, Marius Ritiu trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. He currently lives and works between Antwerp and New York, cultivating a practice rooted in transnational and cross-cultural experience. His oeuvre encompasses sculpture, object design, and conceptual art pieces.

Works by Ritiu have been presented in international exhibitions and artist residencies, including Socrates Sculpture Park (New York), the International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) (New York), Franconia Sculpture Park (Minneapolis), and the Cité Internationale des Arts (Paris) — underscoring his sustained presence within the international institutional landscape.

At the core of Marius Ritiu's artistic practice lies a reimagining of national identity, borders, and collective memory. Working primarily with metal, the artist creates visual metaphors that reflect both individual and shared human experience. His objects become instruments for contemplating geographical, cultural, and psychological boundaries, as well as the continuity and intersection of human narratives.

Employing the traditional hand-crafted repoussé technique, Ritiu shapes sculptures reminiscent of stones, rock formations, and meteorites — forms that appear to exist outside any specific time or place. These "traveling" objects are perceived as traces of movement, migration, and cultural transformation, where form becomes a language capable of conveying the complexity and multilayered nature of the contemporary world.

The practice of Marius Ritiu balances minimalist restraint with rich conceptual depth, offering the viewer a space for contemplation, interpretation, and participation in the process of understanding identity and memory.
