In Vessel № 4, Roger Herman continues his exploration of ceramics as a process in which form emerges through the interaction of material, gesture, and chance. The uneven silhouette and asymmetrical structure emphasize the artist’s rejection of rigid compositional resolution in favour of plastic freedom and spontaneity.
The surface of the work resembles a painterly canvas: vivid fields of colour, flowing glazes, and traces of firing create a complex layered composition. For Herman, colour becomes an autonomous material element, while the unpredictable transformation of glaze during firing forms an essential part of the artistic process.
