Embracing the unpredictable nature of ceramics, Roger Herman consciously reduces the degree of control over the process, allowing the material and the conditions of firing to influence the formation of each work. His large, free-form sculptures give the impression of self-generating objects — unevenly tilting and balancing in the very process of becoming.
His approach to colour follows the same principle: Herman investigates the behaviour of glaze during firing, accepting the divergence between expectation and outcome as an integral part of his artistic method.
