Ex Hale Wallpiece, a glass sculpture by Ben Storms, continues his investigation into the possibilities of glass as a sculptural material. Abandoning traditional blowing, the artist turns to the casting technique, which endows the glass with a visual and tactile density that brings it closer to stone — contrasting with the conventional perception of its transparency and lightness.

The forming process resembles lost-wax casting, a method more commonly associated with bronze. A plaster mould is filled with glass fragments and placed into a kiln, where the material melts within the matrix. After firing, the mould is broken away, releasing the solidified volume. Under the effect of heat, the plaster partially cracks, allowing the glass to seep into the resulting fissures. These traces remain on the surface of the work, recording the course of the process and emphasizing the uniqueness of each object.
