2026 Blown glass, sculptural forming, hand-cut and polished H 44 × W 31 × D 32 cm Unique piece
Sakura captures the moment when a smooth blown glass vessel appears to burst into bloom. Around its luminous core, hundreds of sculpted glass fragments gradually accumulate, transforming a simple silhouette into a richly layered organic form. As light travels through the transparent and coloured glass, the work constantly shifts in character, appearing at once delicate and remarkably substantial.
Each fragment is individually fused to the blown vessel through a highly demanding firing process, allowing apparent spontaneity to resolve into a remarkably coherent composition. The result balances fragility with sculptural presence, revealing both the precision of the making and the unpredictability of molten glass.
For Maarten Vrolijk, the Sakura series is not a literal representation of cherry blossoms, but an evocation of nature in a state of perpetual becoming. Glass becomes more than a material it becomes a living medium through which light, colour, and form continuously transform one another.
