In Hale Cast Glass continues Ben Storms’s exploration of the properties and perception of materials. In this variation of the In Hale table, the familiar form is recreated in cast glass. A plaster mould is made from an existing object and then filled with molten glass. Once the material has cooled, the mould is broken away, leaving traces of the casting process on the finished surface.
While glass is usually associated with lightness and fragility, here it appears massive, dense and almost stone-like. The material’s transparency is combined with a substantial sculptural volume, while its interaction with light reveals its internal structure. In this way, Storms challenges conventional expectations of glass while preserving the work’s function as a coffee table.
