In Ex Hale, Ben Storms continues his exploration of how hard stone can take on the appearance of a soft, air-filled form. The object’s prototype is formed from two joined metal sheets inflated under high pressure. The resulting volume, resembling a monumental cushion, is 3D-scanned and then reproduced from a solid block of honey onyx using CNC milling.

Soft folds and gently compressed edges contrast with the weight and density of the stone. The delicately finished surface reveals the onyx’s natural veining and translucency, reinforcing the illusion of softness. Owing to its scale and solidity, Ex Hale can function as either a coffee table or a bench while remaining a sculptural work in its own right.
